Whitehall Ferry Terminal and the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, New York.

Sectors:
Applications: Lifting and Rigging

Summary:

In lower New York City, the vehicle loading ramps at the Whitehall Ferry Terminal and the Staten Island Ferry Terminal were in need of repair or replacement. The structural engineering firm needed to find a way to attach rigging steel to the old structural steel girders.

The engineering firm contacted UCC Steelwork Connections, their local authorized Lindapter distributor for a bespoke connection solution that would avoid costly lead abatement. The engineers received technical advice from Lindapter and a free proposal that included 2D and 3D drawings of Lindapter Type AF Girder Clamps securing the beams in position. The contractor was confident that the Type AF clamps were the correct choice for the application because of their independent product approvals, high strength capacity and lateral adjustability.

UCC Steelwork Connections quickly despatched the clamps from their local stock holding facilities and stayed in contact with the on-site contractor during the project. The lateral adjustability of the clamps allowed the contractor to conveniently align and secure the beams into position using just standard hand tools.  The Girder Clamp solution provided a secure and reliable temporary connection without damaging the steelwork or its coatings, while avoiding a time-consuming and expensive lead abatement process. The end result was an efficient installation programme with significantly reduced costs.
