Shell M1 LNG Platform
Sectors: Oil & Gas, Structural, Civil
Applications: Temporary Structure
Summary: Lindapter Girder Clamps were used to secure temporary landing beams during the topside expansion of a Shell offshore platform.
Lindapter was asked to provide design advice and onsite supervision of the installation of Lindapter Girder Clamps on the Shell M1 DR-A LNG Platform in the Malaysian South China Sea.
The clamping system was used to support temporary landing beams during work to expand the platform, allowing the installation of an additional gas compression train. Lindapter provided the ideal solution for the offshore application as drilling or welding of the structural steelwork was not permitted, avoiding any unnecessary difficulties and dangers of hot working on the exposed positions. In contrast, the benefits created by Lindapter included the safe and efficient installation and removal of the landing beams with minimal intrusion to rig productivity, all completed without damaging the integrity of the steelwork or requiring hot working permit for this stage of the expansion.
The girder clamps were specified by Technip in Kuala Lumpur following meetings attended by contractors Sime SembCorp Engineering and Lindapter engineers. Discussions involved the selection of various types and different sized Lindapter products to suit the variety of locations and loads to be carried on the topside structure. Shell approved the use of Girder Clamps on the project and also suggested Lindapter engineers were present on-site to offer their expertise while the work was being carried out; this involvement included training of the installation crew as well as overseeing the installation itself to ensure all the work went ahead unhindered.
Lindapter supplied Girder Clamps with capacities ranging up to 250 kN safe working load, with the added flexibility of on-site adjustability to perfectly fit the various beam types and thicknesses of the rig’s steelwork. Installation was fast, simple and above all safe. Following completion of the work the clamps were disassembled, allowing the temporary support beams to be quickly removed and the rest of the project to progress on schedule.
